As any major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
