Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
