A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
